Agave victoriae-reginae, also known as Queen Victoria agave or royal agave, is a striking succulent native to the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico. This plant is renowned for its compact, spherical rosette of thick, dark green leaves adorned with distinctive white markings that appear almost hand-painted. Each leaf is smooth and spineless along the margins but ends in a short, sharp terminal spine.
The rosette typically grows up to 1 foot (30 cm) tall and 1.5 feet (45 cm) wide. While it usually grows as a solitary rosette, it can occasionally produce offsets. Mature plants, which can take over 10 years to flower, produce a tall flowering spike that can reach up to 15 feet (4.5 meters) and is topped with clusters of creamy-white flowers.
Agave victoriae-reginae is highly valued in ornamental gardening for its unique appearance and low maintenance needs. It thrives in well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils and requires full sun to light shade. This agave is drought-tolerant and needs only occasional watering once established. It is also cold-hardy compared to other agaves, making it suitable for various climates.
